Lanvin: The Insider's Choice in Menswear

Judging from the applause at the end of Lanvin's latest menswear runway show, the best received collection in Europe these past 10 days in either Milan or Paris was that of this storied French brand.

A cunning distillation of several ideas - the revival of the dandy, bohemian tailoring and sensitive chic - the collection won a standing ovation at its finale on the morning of Sunday, June 27, in Paris. Staged in the Mineralogy Gallery of Paris' elegant Botanical Gardens - the cast got dressed before man-sized crystals in the backstage - the collection was a great statement of libertine French gentleman's style. They were clothes that most every guy in the audience wanted to wear, and which women would love to see their husbands or boyfriends buy.

"Half the shows in Paris had men skirts; so we thought a little jewelry would not go amiss," joked the house's creative director Alber Elbaz post show. It was not shy jewelry, by the way, but massive chokers, leather pendants with grommets and shells on neck chains.

The house - a major trend maker in footwear - also showed striking, new sandals with tire style soles and cloth tops, that will be very influential.
Elbaz is arguably the finest draper currently designing women's clothes, and he lent some of that skill to a natty series of jerseys that curled around the upper torso heroically. And, just when one felt the looks were getting a bit too much, Elbaz and the house's men's director Lucas Ossendrijver socked you with some active sportswear mixes - like track jackets, vertical stripe jockey tops or brilliantly cut jogging pants.

But the high point was the open-seamed, arty, rascally tailoring; deliberately looking a tad aged and lived-in, climaxing with bubbly crepe suits in dazzling hues of imperial purple and faded gold. "We wanted to get away from the whole macho thing, from the stigma of being sensitive," added the designer, as models knocked back champagne on the sun-filled gallery steps.

Fashion comes first at Royal Ascot Ladies' Day

Jockey Frankie Dettori has no doubts-- Ladies Day at Royal Ascot is a world beater for dedicated followers of fashion.

Sporting top hat and tails with a pink rose in his buttonhole, the ebullient Italian argued that when it came to elegant racing it was no contest. Ascot beat the Kentucky Derby and Arc day in Paris every time.

"Absolutely. At Royal Ascot we have had 300 years of practice," he told Reuters, reveling in the fashion extravaganza as women paraded in their finest for Ascot Gold Cup day. For Dettori this is "the Olympics of racing."

Fashion designer Jeff Banks, resplendent in purple waistcoat, agreed.

"What I love about British fashion is its witticism. In France they take themselves far too seriously and in Kentucky it is all about the money -- how much did you spend on that."

Admiring all the finery and fascinators around him, Banks said: "I've been designing for 46 years and I never get tired of it."

Royal Ascot, immortalized by flower girl Eliza Dolittle in the musical "My Fair Lady," is the High Society highlight of an exhausting summer season that stretches from the Chelsea Flower Show to Wimbledon and the Henley Royal Regatta.

For party-going poseurs, it is all about cutting a dash, seizing a brief moment of fashion fame as paparazzi prowl the track in search of the outlandish.

Royal Ascot was once so exclusive that divorcees were banned and ladies had to wear gloves. Today aristocrats are outnumbered by hedge fund managers and Ascot's "fashion police" are on red alert for any sign of mini-skirts and midriffs which are banned.

Ardent racegoers are there to revel in one of the world's greatest racing festivals. The socialites just want to be seen.

That aggravates former jockey turned BBC commentator Willie Carson. "I am not into fashion when I am horse raciong," he said. "But we are always very glad that the ladies come to see our beautiful thoroughbreds."

But Ascot raceourse manager Charles Barnett is phlegmatic about the mix.

"There is a great cross-section of people who like racing and people here just for the fashion. Everyone mixes together."

Royal Ascot is given priceless social cachet by Queen Elizabeth who parades up the course in an open-top landau before racing every day.

In the 18th century, Queen Anne first spotted Ascot's potential when riding in the forest near Windsor Castle. The course was opened in 1711.

Betting is an essential ingredient in the Ascot cocktail and bookmakers enter into the spirit of the fashion parade - odds are offered every day on the color of Queen Elizabeth's hat.

Royal College of Art fashion show

Colour, embellishment, craftsmanship and a high-tech approach to fabric manipulation characterised the Royal College of Art's MA graduate collections shown in London today (June 10). Thirty-three students from the RCA’s prestigious School of Fashion - the world’s only wholly postgraduate fashion department - presented their collections to press and industry heads; ten students from menswear, and eighteen from womenswear.

The menswear collections took inspiration from J.G.Ballard’s novel, ‘Crash’, chavs, Spanish matadors fused with hip-hop culture, soldiers and skinheads. Designs included copper and silver metal yarn woven into tailored suits, smocking techniques to creative unusual shapes and volume, and a bling-bling hybrid of Pop-Art and bubblegum colours, fur and golden embroidery.

The womenswear collections included tunics and robes embellished with thousands of porcupine quills, hand-crocheted dresses with pom-pom hems, silken gowns decorated with handmade silk roses, and mini-dresses made from bands of fabric joined by metal rods. Zara Gorman’s hats made a dramatic accessory statement, being fashioned from leather, wood and plastic, cut in the manner of windshields, Venetian blinds and shells.

Other accessory designs were featured in the RCA’s static display, including footwear made with Perspex, PVC, latex, silicone and digitally-printed satin; together with artisan-influenced bags employing techniques such as basketry, and weaving and knotting, using bamboo and leather.

The RCA’s Fashion department was founded in 1948, by the former Vogue editor, Madge Garland. Among its most famous graduates are Ossie Clark, Bill Gibb, Philip Treacy, Antony Price, Julien Macdonald, Christopher Bailey and Erdem. More recent graduates who are creating a buzz are Holly Fulton, Heikki Salonen, David Longshaw, Rachael Barrett, the shoe designer Camilla Skovgaard, and the milliner, Jusatin Smith. The head of the School of Fashion is Professor Wendy Dagworthy.

Top 4 Fashion Accessories to Wear With the Celine Medium Canvas Luggage Bag

I was ecstatic upon learning that Phoebe Philo has returned to the fashion world. She is not back at Chloe, but is this time around working at Celine. Oh what a breath of fresh air she is for the Italian fashion house!

Her first runway collection after a long hiatus was a big hit with editors, celebrities and consumers alike. That is the reason why a vintage inspired luggage bag, namely the "Celine Medium Canvas Luggage Bag", is on the top of my shopping list for spring 2010. It is not an extravagant "It Bag", but for some reason it appeals to me.

We have picked out different items that we believe can be matched with the "Celine Medium Canvas Luggage Bag" for a perfect spring outfit:

1. Kimberly Ovitz Cecil Strapless Dress: When spring comes, every girl just has to have a little white dress in their closets. This one from Kimberly Ovitz is a winner. The sweetheart neckline and the visible zipper creates a nice juxtaposition to the piece.

2. Vince Rustic Linen Blazer: Another important trend this season is the color (or lack of ) khaki. This khaki blazer in linen will work well with the LWD above.

3. Derek Lam Odesa Lace Up Sandals: I could not help but drool over this Derek Lam creation. It has spring chic written all over it. The cork heels, the rope lace up, the washed pebbled leather, they all work well together in this covetable piece. And it sure complements the Celine bag.

4. Jessica Simpson Cat's Eye Sunglasses: Another trend dominating this season are cat's eye accessories. This Jessica Simpson pair polishes the above outfit seamlessly.

We hope that this outfit has inspired you to try something new for 2010!

Fashion forward in London as Topshop kicks off shows and parties in the capital

London Fashion Week got off to a glorious, Technicolor start, shrugging off the growing concern that hangs over the multi-million-pound event.

The six-day event, which sees the international fashion industry decamp to London to view the best of British, began with Topshop revealing its Unique collection for spring-summer 2009.

It did not disappoint - despite the status of the event in London coming under threat from America.

With New York insisting the dates of its own fashion weeks be moved to begin on the second Friday of February and September, London's biannual fashion showcase - worth an estimated £100 million to the economy - is being bullied and squeezed by its older, established rival.

Emergency talks held by the British Fashion Council this week - and including Topshop's billionaire owner Sir Philip Green - will attempt a fightback.

But the likelihood is that London's event will be reduced to four days at best from next year.

Sex and the City: Body Image Edition

With Sex and the City 2 hitting theaters today, chances are you've got plans to catch the flick with a few girlfriends -- and, if you're smart, you'll be sneaking in a Nalgene bottle full of cosmopolitan juice. Even if you're not, I'm willing to bet you've watched at least one episode of the monster hit - enough to know the show revolves around four NY women looking for love, happiness, career success and seriously daring shoes.

But in the process of taking us along on Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda's personal and professional rollercoasters, SATC has also taught us about loving our bodies in its own creative way. Beyond the show, the actresses themselves have been through their own ups and downs - Sarah Jessica Parker is consistently and undeservedly attacked for her unconventional beauty; Kristin Davis recently told Fitness magazine that with age has come a growing acceptance for her body. Scripted or not, they always seem to come out on top. Here are a few of our favorite body image lessons, courtesy of SATC:

Models make EVERYONE feel like crap

In "Models and Mortals" (Season 1), Carrie's voiceover tells us "There's nothing like raising the subject of models among four single women to spice up an otherwise dull Tuesday night." After dogging on these "giraffes with big breasts" for encouraging a culture that promotes impossible standards of beauty (Charlotte: "They have this distant, sexy look." Miranda: "That's not sexy, that's starvation."), the following convo ensues:

CHARLOTTE: You know, no matter how good I feel about myself if I see Christy Turlington, I just wanna give up.

MIRANDA: I just wanna force feed her lard, but that's the difference between you and me.

CARRIE: What are you talking about? Look at you two, you're beautiful.

CHARLOTTE: Oooo I hate my thighs.

MIRANDA: Oh, come on.

CHARLOTTE: I can't even open a magazine without thinking "thighs, thighs, thighs."

MIRANDA: Well I'll take your thighs and raise you a chin.

CARRIE: I'll take you a chin and raise you a ... (points at nose).

(All look at Samantha expectantly)

SAMANTHA: What?

CARRIE: Come on.

SAMANTHA: I happen to love the way I loo.

MIRANDA: You should. You paid enough for it. ( Miranda, Carrie and Charlotte all laugh)

SAMANTHA: Hey, I resent that. I do not believe in plastic surgery. Well, not yet.

CARRIE: (Voice-Over) Suddenly, I was interested. If models could cause otherwise rational individuals to crumble in their presence, exactly how powerful was beauty?

Chances are, other women think you're hot, even if you don't

In "Attack Of The Five Foot Ten Woman" (Season 3), Carrie becomes upset when she and Charlotte visit a hot restaurant know for their deserts and she (Charlotte) only orders a fruit cup. Charlotte reiterates how much she hates her thighs, and Carrie explains that the problem isn't in her thighs, it's in her mind.

Carrie then whips out a pricey new pair of shoes procured for an upcoming luncheon...during which she'll be running into her ex's current love, a 25-year-old model (Natasha). Charlotte tells Carrie that she can wear a paper sack and she'll still be the most fabulous woman in attendance. Carrie's response sounds alarmingly similar to something my therapist might say: "Wow! Why can't you do that for yourself?"

Later that afternoon, Charlotte is feeling empowered by her conversation with Carrie. In the locker room at her gym, she bravely sheds her towel in the steam room - something she had been unable to do before. Within moments, a fellow steamer says, "I'd kill for your breasts." Charlotte smiles...as did I.

Even beautiful actresses get tripped up by their looks
In May, Kristin Davis said in a magazine interview that the series has boosted her confidence and shored up her body image. She told Red magazine, "'You get a lot of criticism out in the world or on the internet about how you look. 'Fat here, fat there. Hippy this, hippy that. That has been my entire career." Thankfully, she says, nobody at SATC has ever asked her to lose weight. She also told BettyConfidential.com that her self-esteem has shifted and changed - for the better - as she's aged: "I remember in my twenties when I would go in for auditions and I'd be competing with tall, thin, gorgeous model, I'd just sit there in my seat next to them thinking, "Why am I here?" But with age comes wisdom and I eventually realized I have hips and curves and I'm never going to be the thinnest actress--and I don't want to be. Once I started excepting (sic) my body in my thirties, that's when my career really took off. I think when you're at peace with yourself, you're automatically going to be more confident, and that shows." (You can also check Davis out in Fitness magazine, whom she told last month, "I have hips! I'm never going to be the thinnest actress, and I don't want to be. When you're at peace with yourself and your body, you're automatically more confident.")

"The SJP Divide"
Women tend to fawn over Sarah Jessica Parker - Her hair! Her clothes! Her fabulous style! - but men...mot so much? The charming actress, who some have affectionately referred to as "jolie laide" ("ugly beautiful") is consistently bashed for her looks by men. Entire websites are dedicated to it, practically making it a sport. I don't understand this. Some theories purport that it has to do with the fact that she dresses for her fashionista self, not for men. Sadie at jezebel.com thinks part of is a result of men becoming angry that we women continue to adore her despite the fact that they have collectively deemed her unattractive: " In a sense, we are defying them, creating a new ideal of sexiness that has nothing to do with male gratification... If we disagree about what is fundamentally sexy, this becomes threatening, because the subtext of all sexiness is male attraction. To women, Sarah Jessica Parker is the actress who has shown women can be attractive without being conventionally "pretty." To men, this distinction doesn't exist"

Do you think SATC is positive for women's body image? What's your favorite episode from the series?
